Puto is a popular Filipino delicacy. Great for breakfast and tea time, these soft and fluffy steamed rice cakes are usually eaten as a snack. While you can get premade puto mix at your local supermarkets, nothing beats the homemade versions made with love. Making this dish has never been easier with our cheese puto recipe.

Ingredients
125g of all-purpose flour
100g of sugar
1 tbsp of baking powder
100ml of milk
1 egg
50ml of water
1 tbsp of butter, melted
1 tsp of vanilla extract
60g of grated cheese
Equipment
1 bowl
1 whisk
1 spatula
10 small moulds, greased
A steamer
Directions
In a bowl, combine all-purpose flour, sugar, and baking powder.
Pour milk into the bowl and crack an egg.
With a whisk, mix the ingredients until it forms a smooth batter.
Add water, butter, vanilla extract, and mix until well incorporated.
Add in the grated cheese and fold gently using a spatula.
Evenly pour the batter into the moulds until they’re three-quarters full.
Prepare the steamer with water over low heat, and bring it to a gentle simmer.
Place the moulds in the steamer and let them cook for 10 minutes.
Remove the moulds from the steamer and set aside to cool down.
Unmould the puto and serve!
Tips and Tricks
Perfect this puto recipe with these few pointers. If you’re using a hand mixer for the batter, avoid using it at high speed. Place a cheesecloth over the top of the steamer to prevent water from dripping into the batter. When steaming the puto, steam it on the lowest heat. This will allow your puto to rise evenly.
